Consumers are responding to rises in motoring costs and challenging economic conditions by deferring routine vehicle repair, servicing and maintenance jobs, according to a survey carried out this month by Glass's Guide.

Findings from the survey revealed that almost half (46 per cent) have deferred some of their car-related expenditure over the past year, including 15 per cent that have postponed routine professional car service. A further 8 per cent have taken the potentially dangerous decision to delay the purchase of replacement tyres, while 15 per cent had rescheduled the rectification of bodywork repairs. Some 13 per cent of the respondents had pushed back a scheduled check on their vehicle's air conditioning system.

Clearly this has a health and safety impact for drivers who use their own cars for business purposes - another good reason to consider a Promise car, where all routinace servicing and repairs are included.

I see that the Arnold Clark Group has announced that it is creating 700 new jobs across the UK by early 2010. Over 500 new sales jobs will be created, as well as 120 modern apprentice places and 80 support roles. The boost was partly down to the "stabilisation" of the car market because of the Government's scrappage scheme,Chancellor Alistair Darling has welcomed the news and said the announcement was "good news" for the car market.

The company announcement said there would be 155 new jobs in the Glasgow area, 25 in the Dundee area, 50 in the Aberdeen region and 130 in and around Edinburgh. South of the border, 150 new posts will be created in the Manchester region, 20 in the Warrington area, 20 in and around Stafford, 80 in the Huddersfield area and 70 at a new site in the north of England.

The brand new Toyota Prius has won its first accolade - What Green Car of the Year. The newest Prius from Toyota was chosen from a shortlist of ten green cars and will launch on August 1st 2009.

Toyot Prius
Dr Ben Lane, Managing Editor of WhatGreenCar said: "While this year's judges were rightly impressed by the range of green car technologies employed by the 10 car short-list, they were unanimous in their acclaim for the new Prius. In addition to the new model's best-in-class cradle-to-grave environmental credentials, the panel particularly commented on the way the car seamlessly integrates green features as part of its design.

Car Scrappage Scheme is here

So the Chancellor has decided to introduce a Car Scrappage Scheme after all.   The scheme starts in May 2009 and is due to end in March 2010, although it could end sooner if the £300 million the Government has put aside is used up.

To get your £2,000 voucher, you have to buy a new vehicle and the vehicle you trade-in must be at least 10 years old.  To avoid people just nipping down to their local scrapyard and buying an old banger for £50, the vehicle must have an MoT and must have been registered with the same keeper for the last 12 months.

It's easy to think that in a downturn, it becomes a buyers market and when it comes to looking for new staff, the employer has the pick of the bunch.

In this interesting article, Auren Hoffman argues that in fact it's actually harder for some industries.
